Wales Veterans mourns the loss of two members

By Alun Huish

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of two Wales Veterans footballers, Neil Perry and John Salmon

Neil Perry – Swansea Veterans
1955 - 2026

Neil played Welsh League football in the late 1970s and 1980s with Haverfordwest, Merthyr and Carmarthen, and was well known as a hard-tackling defender and midfielder. He later joined Swansea University Vets, the forerunner of Swansea Vets.

Neil was an influential figure associated with Swansea University Veterans Football, where he has been recognized for his foundational role and ongoing dedication to veterans' football in the region. He is credited as the primary inspiration behind the club's formal Code of Conduct, establishing the core ethos that veteran players should actively "give something back to the game".

He received a WVFA Welsh cap for playing Representative football across the UK and Europe and he will be sorely missed by everyone within the Wales Veterans’ Football community.

Neil had been living with dementia recently, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

John Salmon – Pontyclun Veterans
1971 - 2026

John Salmon joined Pontyclun Veterans o50s two seasons ago. He was a quiet person on the field and let his ability do the talking and was a quick and gifted striker. He moved up to the o55s squad this year and made an immediate impact, scoring a brace on his debut.

He worked in Panasonic in Cardiff for about 35 years and he was a passionate Cardiff city fan. He will be sorely missed by his teammates and everyone within the Wales Veterans’ Football Association would like to pass on their condolences to his friends and family and especially his wife, son and daughter with whom he dedicated a lot of his time.
