Women’s Veterans Football Kicks-off!

By Alun Huish

Over 30 women took part in the first Wales Veterans’ Football ‘Running’ tournament for women on Saturday 14th at Cambrian United FC in Clydach Vale.

Over 30 women took part in a series of 7-a-side Competitions in the o35s, o45s and o55s age-categories, to reflect the diverse range of ages involved....and all were keenly-contested.

Veterans teams had travelled from as far-afield as Merthyr, Llanelli, Cardiff and Caldicot...which demonstrated the demand for this type event. Organiser, Katie Davies, said "we wanted to ‘bridge the gap’ between the shorter walking football format and the 11-a-side running game and provide football for women who can, and still want to run!”

Her colleague, Jo Davies added “the event was a huge success and everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed the football and after-match refreshments!" adding, "We can’t wait to do it again...and next time we are hoping for greater numbers to get involved.”

Invited representatives from the Wales Veterans FA, Alun Huish and Mike Harris, were very impressed with the standard of football, the fitness and enthusiasm shown and they are keen to support the initiative going forward.
