o70s League kick-off with wins for Merthyr and Swansea!

The o70s Workwear Supermarket.com LEAGUE 2025/26 finally got underway at a blustery Ocean Park and Swansea and Merthyr lead the charge at this early stage.

Newport 0, Swansea 3
In a fantastic, high-quality encounter, Newport hosted Swansea, with the latter claiming the 3 points, beating the pre-season favourites, by 0-3. Newport started brightly, but the Swans were always a threat on the break and so it proved, as Barletta took advantage of a defensive error to slot home after 8 minutes. Veasey put the Swans 2nil up when his superb strike from 20 yards screamed past keeper, Williams. In the 20th minute, the same player made it 0-3, when he tapped in a rebound, when Algieri struck the post 10 minutes before the interval. In the second half, Newport pressed for parity but with Wales no1, Meacham, in sparkling form, Swansea held on and move top of the League.

Merthyr 1, Barry Town 0
In the second game, Barry Town had the lions share of possession with Branch, again, pulling the strings, but Merthyr defended stubbornly and deeply, limiting the space for their opponents. Nevertheless, Barry created a number of clear-cut chances, which were either saved by the Merthyr keeper(s), or failed to hit the target. Merthyr were dangerous on the break with John Challenger and Arnold always a threat, and they too, had opportunities to score but it remained scoreless at half-time. In the second half Barry lost the talismanic Branch through injury, allowing Merthyr’s Fisher, to become more prominent and the game became more evenly balanced. Barry still created a number clear chances to win the game, and their profligacy came back to bite them when, midway through the second half, substitute, Rob Challenger, saw his shot well-saved by keeper, Gahan, but Arnold was at hand to tap home. Merthyr defended stoutly for the remainder of the game and they claimed the 3 points.
