2nd December
Penybont moved top of the o70 WorkwearSupermarket.com League courtesy of a 2-1 win over Barry Town. The Bridgend side were quick out of the blocks and when Barry surrendered possession cheaply, Veasey sprinted forward before putting in a cross which Paul Morgan slotted home calmly. Minutes later an uncharacteristic loose pass from Gibb was gratefully accepted and converted by Peter Morgan, to give Penybont a 2-0 lead. Barry finished the half the stronger and when Veasey was penalised for his 4th foul in succession, Gibbins fierce free-kick was deflected in, to make it 2-1 at half-time. Barry had the better of the exchanges in the second half with Gibbins and Powell impressing. Errington struck the outside of the post and Malvisi just failed to connect with a Mullins through ball, but Bryn Jones, Bryn Davies and Heginbothom defended stubbornly for Penybont, and keeper, Les Davies, was rarely troubled and his side held on for a valuable 3 points.
Pre-season favourites, Newport, finally came to the party with a deserved 2-0 win over Swansea. Newport had the better chances to take the lead in the first half with Compton going close, on two occasions but it remained 0-0 at the interval. Gerry Jones opened the scoring with a cross-cum-shot which evaded Swans keeper, Meacham. 15 minutes later Dickinson sealed victory and his side's first points from close range.
21st October
After many months of planning behind the scenes at the WVFA, the o70 WorkwearSupermarket.com League, finally got underway with two matches at Cardiff University Fields.
Barry Town with 78 year olds, Frank Lennon and Joe Quarini and world cup winning captain, Phil Gibb in the squad, defeated a much-fancied Newport side 2-0. Geoff Malvisi headed home a Peterson cross, and Jimmy Mullen slid home after good work by his former Cardiff City teammate, Roger Gibbins. In the other game Penybont recorded an emphatic 4-0 win against Swansea with goals by Paul Williams (2), Dai Veasey and Bob Nelson. Talismanic world cup winning striker, Peter Morgan, turning provider for the day.
WVFA Commercial Manger, Jon Ross, commented afterwards “All the hard work has been worth it and these guys are an inspiration for anyone who loves the game, including those playing in the o40s Leagues, who in 30 years’ time could be playing in the o70s league!”
