Penybont lift inaugural o70s League trophy!

24th March
Congratulations to Penybont, who lifted the o70s League trophy after a convincing 5-0 win over Newport....writes Dai Veasey.... Penybont started strongly and chased hard and with the strong wind in the backs pinned their opponents deep in their own half. Eventually the pressure told and Veasey put Morgan through, who calmly rounded the keeper and slotted home. Minutes later, Veasey won the ball on the edge of the area and calmly placed the ball in the corner of the net. Penybont were now rampant and Morgan duly completed his hat-trick. Just before half-time, Morgan took a short free kick to Veasey, who gleefully smashed home. The second half saw Newport come out strong, but although they hit the woodwork twice they lacked real firepower and struggled to penetrate the solid opposition defence of Fisher, Cooper and Roberts, and keeper, Davies was rarely troubled. They held on for the 3 points and deservedly claimed the inaugural o70s WorkwearSupermarket.com League title.
The match between Barry Town and Swansea was a fairly dour affair mainly due to the gale-force wind! But there was a lot of inaccuracy show, symptomatic of a 'dead-rubber' fixture. Griffiths and Myerscough were the stand-outs for the Swans and for Barry, Miles worked hard but Gibb was the outstanding player on the field. Barry Town finished runners-up courtesy of a 3-0 conceded match.

3rd March
Penybont were emphatic 7-2 winners of the top of the table clash against Barry Town...writes Dai Veasey & Tim Morgan... a debilitated Barry raced out of the blocks and tore into their opponents. Penybont had no answer to the Barry forward line who hit the post in the first minute and then took a deserved 2-0 lead through Miles and Arnold. Penybont regrouped and when a cynical foul took out Barry danger-man, Lennon and minutes later the talismanic Gibbins followed him..Penybont seized the initiative! Veasey was fouled after bursting into the area and Morgan (Peter) dispatched the resultant penalty. (Paul) Morgan equalised shortly afterwards with a fine shot into the top corner and the Bridgend outfit were now in the ascendancy. A strong run and shot from Jones gave his side a 3 -2 half time lead.
In the second half the hosts had the wind in their sails, and against an opponent gradually running out of steam, took control of the match. Both Morgan’s scored a second goal each, and then a late brace by Steer secured the 3 points and cemented Penybont’s place at the top of the league.

A close encounter between these two 'old' rivals saw Newport just edge out Swansea with a well taken first half goal by Gartside in an entertaining game of o70's football...writes Roving Reporter Meacham... ...Newport started the brighter and almost took an early lead when a rasping shot from Gerry Jones was parried to safety for a corner, but it wasn't long before Swansea hit back with Newton and Griffiths forcing saves from Williams, and then Cosker, just missing out on a final touch from close range. As Swansea continued to grow in confidence as they sought to restore parity, Newport defended resolutely with MoM 'Sasha' Young, Jordan and Brustad making crucial interventions as Swansea pressed forward. The introduction of Austin for the injured Cosker further reinforced Swansea's control of midfield in the second half and as Swansea threw caution to the wind their opponents held firm with combination of solid defending, spurned chances, not to mention some good fortune when a 20 yard drive from Newton crashed against the bar late on.
Well done to both sides. A credit to the 70's League.

10th February
Barry Town sealed the ‘double’ over pre-season favourites, Newport, with a satisfying 1-0 win over the pre-season favourites. A midfield battle ensued with Jones and Rowlands prominent for the East Walians and Gibbins likewise for the sea-siders, the latter seeing two fine efforts well saved by Newport keeper, Sully. The defences were on top today...Jordan and Brustad consumate for Newport, and the Barry defence defiant until they lost the excellent Mullins and Powell to injury, leaving the outstanding Quarini to keep the Newport strikers at bay! Rowlands fired a number of shots from distance which keeper, Gahan, dealt with comfortably and at the other Gibbins saw two fine efforts well saved by Newport keeper, Sully and it remained scoreless at the interval. Within minutes of the restart, the ageless Lennon put Barry ahead with a fine angled drive...and then it was just a matter of hanging on....which became more difficult when they also lost Bowker and then talismanic Gibbins to injury! But through great determination by all involved, they held on for the 3 points.
Penybont stay in the hunt for silverware after an end to end game against Swansea. Penybont sealed the points courtesy of an own goal by Swansea defender, Chris Jones.

20th January
Newport continued their upsurge in form with a fine win over leaders, Penybont. Diaper on the scoresheet on the half-hour. Barry Town moved level with Penybont at the top courtesy of a 3-0 win over Swansea.

2nd December
Penybont moved top of the o70 WorkwearSupermarket.com League courtesy of a 2-1 win over Barry Town. The Bridgend side were quick out of the blocks and when Barry surrendered possession cheaply, Veasey sprinted forward before putting in a cross which Paul Morgan slotted home calmly. Minutes later an uncharacteristic loose pass from Gibb was gratefully accepted and converted by Peter Morgan, to give Penybont a 2-0 lead. Barry finished the half the stronger and when Veasey was penalised for his 4th foul in succession, Gibbins fierce free-kick was deflected in, to make it 2-1 at half-time. Barry had the better of the exchanges in the second half with Gibbins and Powell impressing. Errington struck the outside of the post and Malvisi just failed to connect with a Mullins through ball, but Bryn Jones, Bryn Davies and Heginbothom defended stubbornly for Penybont, and keeper, Les Davies, was rarely troubled and his side held on for a valuable 3 points.
Pre-season favourites, Newport, finally came to the party with a deserved 2-0 win over Swansea. Newport had the better chances to take the lead in the first half with Compton going close, on two occasions but it remained 0-0 at the interval. Gerry Jones opened the scoring with a cross-cum-shot which evaded Swans keeper, Meacham. 15 minutes later Dickinson sealed victory and his side's first points from close range.

21st October
After many months of planning behind the scenes at the WVFA, the o70 WorkwearSupermarket.com League, finally got underway with two matches at Cardiff University Fields.

Barry Town with 78 year olds, Frank Lennon and Joe Quarini and world cup winning captain, Phil Gibb in the squad, defeated a much-fancied Newport side 2-0. Geoff Malvisi headed home a Peterson cross, and Jimmy Mullen slid home after good work by his former Cardiff City teammate, Roger Gibbins. In the other game Penybont recorded an emphatic 4-0 win against Swansea with goals by Paul Williams (2), Dai Veasey and Bob Nelson. Talismanic world cup winning striker, Peter Morgan, turning provider for the day.

WVFA Commercial Manger, Jon Ross, commented afterwards “All the hard work has been worth it and these guys are an inspiration for anyone who loves the game, including those playing in the o40s Leagues, who in 30 years’ time could be playing in the o70s league!”
