Congratulations to Merthyr, who lifted the WorkwearSupermarket.com o55s League crown in style with another emphatic win, this time at Abertillery Sports Centre. Carpanini (2), Evans and Owen were on target to secure the 3 points and, consequently, the title.

Barry Town 1, Swansea 2
An entertaining, free-flowing game at Bro Morgannwg saw the visitors take the lead, against the run of play, with a Romanello header on 12 minutes. The hosts created the better chances and scored through Matthews on the half hour mark. Barry continued to press but found keeper Joyce in fine form and Medwin imperious at the heart of the Swans defence. Inevitably, the visitors sealed victory when Stephen capitalised on a defensive blunder.

Penybont 3, Llanelli Town 2
A fluctuating match with Penybont taking the lead twice at the SDM Stadium through John and Lewis. Steve Evans and Shells replied for the Reds to make the last 10 minutes tense until the hosts claimed the 3 points with a late Christopher winner.

Cardiff Academicals 2, Swansea 2
All square at Penyrheol Leisure Centre with Fredrickson putting the hosts 2 up before Lewis got one back for the visitors before half-time. Payne’s well-publicised ‘worldie’ in the last minute of the match earned Accies a share of the spoils and a £250 cheque from 'You've Been Framed'! :)

A great advert for veterans football at Leckwith Campus with the visitors dominating but failing to beat the impressive Accies keeper, Dan Burton, and the game was still scoreless at the interval. Barry made the breakthrough early in the second half when Matthews stroked home calmly before Sanderson made it 2-0 with a good turn and finish. Sullivan could have snatched one back for the hosts but hit the A4232 from an inch out! Matthews secured the points for his side, finishing well from the edge of the box and then executed a sublime clip over the advancing keeper to complete his hat-trick.

Llanelli Town 0, Newport 8
A tough day at the office for the hosts at Penrhos School writes a roving reporter.... Newport were deserved winners and they showed why they are pushing at the top end of the table but the Reds were guilty of being the creators of their own downfall by gifting the visiting strike-force opponents with a few goals....Frederiksen and Thompson bagging themselves four and three goals each respectively and were dangerous all afternoon. The lively John Ross also got himself on the scoresheet and they continue to put pressure on the WorkwearSupermarket.com o55s League leaders.

They were quickly out of the traps and former Barry striker, Fredriksen, punished his former ‘listless’ charges with a well-taken brace and, but for a fine performance by Barry stopper, Toop, the half time lead could have been greater. Barry showed more character in the second 40 and both teams had chances to score but visitors were second best on the day.

17th December
Barry Town 0, Merthyr Tydfil 2
A poor start by the under-strength hosts, enabled a strong Merthyr team to take the initiative at Bro Morgannwg and they were on top from the start against a lacklustre Barry, who were however, unfortunate to concede to a shot-come-cross from Andy Owen. Mark Walker gave them a deserved 2 goal lead but they failed to convert several other opportunities before going into the break 0-2 up. The hosts made changes and the ‘old’ guard made a fist of it in the second half but Merthyr secured a fine win which moves them top of the WorkwearSupermarket.com o55s League table.

Llanelli Town 5, Penybont 6
A goal-fest at Penrhos today ended with Penybont (pictured) taking the spoils and star-man Vince Lewis notching five of their goals...writes a pitch-side reporter.....
Penybont started strongly and Lewis put them ahead on 6 minutes to set the benchmark for both teams. Lewis scored again to give the visitors a 0-2 half-time lead. Llanelli converted an 80th minute penalty to make the last couple of injury time minutes twitchy for the visitors, but they held on for the 3 points.

The second half followed a similar pattern, lots of endeavour but little goal-mouth activity until the visitors showed their ‘Vets League’ experience, with Pat Chichester heading home on the hour.
