17th May
Llanelli Town lifted the o45s trophy after a scintillating game against Barry Town at a blustery Cardiff University Campus. A fairly even encounter was punctuated by moments of brilliance by Llanelli striker and Swans legend, Lee Trundle, who scored 4 and ‘set-up’ the 5th. Barry started the stronger with Maher controlling the midfield and Riches consummate at the back, but a hamstring injury to Evans was to prove costly as the Barry defensive unit struggled to contain the outstanding Trundle. Within 10 minutes he cut-inside Richards and arrowed his first goal into the top corner, even though keeper, Morgan got a hand to it. Ferguson equalised 5 minutes later after good work by Aldridge, but the same player hit an upright from the penalty spot...which proved to be critical! Trundle turned the debilitated Evans and cannoned his shot in-off the underside of the bar to put his team into a 2-1 interval lead.
On 55 minutes Trundle tricked the defender, and sped goal-wards only to be brought down by Barry MoM, Riches...and Bartley duly converted. Ten minutes later it was Trundle again, who cut-inside and fired low down to the keeper’s right. Trundle completed a MoM performance with an impudent ‘back-heel’ after, again, turning the Barry defence. Credit to last season’s cup winners, who pressed forward for respectability and Hutchins finished from close-in after good work by Searle. With minutes remaining an excellent free-kick from Barry’s Davies, rebounded off the bar to safety and the Reds held on to secure a League and Cup double against their ‘main’ rivals.
8th May
Barry Town beat Penydarren 1-5 at The Bont in this re-scheduled Friday night semi-final.
Aldridge was on fine form for the visitors, scoring 2 early goals then providing an assist for teammate, Ferguson. Griffiths and Davies completed the scoring to secure the win which sees League runners-up, Barry, face League winners, Llanelli, in the Cup final on 17th May. Lane scored a consolation for the hosts.
3rd May
Llanelli Town beat Briton Ferry Llansawel 2-1 to move into the final on 17th May where they will face the winner of the Penydarren v Barry Town tie...writes Kev Bartley...Llanelli took an early lead when Cerison Davies converted a cross from Kev Bartley. Soon after, Briton Ferry won a free kick on the edge of the Llanelli penalty area and Tom Warren smashed home. It remained 1-1 going into half time.
In the second half Llanelli stepped up the pressure, although Ferry always looked dangerous on the break with Del Patel always a theat. The breakthrough came for the hosts on 77mins when an excellent through ball by Willy Williams was finished off by Kev Bartley. The remainder of the game was end to end and Llanelli were happy to hear the final whistle. This was another great example of how physically demanding this league is, and credit to both teams.
