The Wales Veterans' Football Association sent an o65s/70s squad to the recent Super Masters Football World Cup in Copenhagen...and the squad performed well and finished in third place after 12 hard-fought encounters against countries including, USA, Hungary, Denmark and Switzerland.
The event, which is now annual, evolved from an over 40s tournament that started in Brighton in 2006 and now includes an over 65s, 5-a-side tournament, with Wales Veterans entering a strong squad for the first time this year.
Day one - Wales started strongly with a 4-1 win against Ancient Britons (2 goals by Williams, one by Lambert, and one by Blackaby); followed by a 9-2 win against United Nations (4 goals by Peter Morgan, 3 by Lambert, one by Williams and one by Paul Heginbotham). There then followed a series of three back to back games where the Wales squad could only manage a 1-1 draw against FIFA (Goal by Peter Morgan), followed by a 1-0 loss to England Old Stars and a 3-1 loss to USA (goal by Williams). However, after a rest and a regroup, Wales came roaring back to defeat last year’s winners, Northern Ireland team, 6-1 with 4 goals by Williams, one by Lambert and one by Morgan.

Day Two – The first game ended Wales 4 Hungary 2 (2 goals by Peter Morgan, and one a-piece for James and Moglia); followed by a nail-biting 4-3 win against the hosts, Denmark (2 goals by “Nobby” Edwards, one by Jason Morgan, and one by Lambert). Wales then defeated a strong Republic of Ireland 3-1 (2 goals by Moglia and one by James). Next up were runaway leaders, England Amateurs, and although Wales had their chances, they lost 2-0 to a very good team. Again, Wales bounced back to defeat Switzerland 2-0 (goals by Peter Morgan and James). Wales went in to the last game needing a win to reach the final but could only draw 0-0 so had to settle for third place on goal difference!
