Fine win for Pontyclun but Newport stay top!

25th October
Pontyclun finally kicked off their season this weekend winning 6-0 against Swansea...writes Tim Martin...The game started after an emotional tribute to not only Pontyclun's John Salmon but also Swansea’s Neil Perry who both passed away in the past 2 weeks.
In the game itself, on a difficult grass pitch, Fitzgibbon broke the deadlock on 27 minutes, heading in from a corner followed up 3 minutes later with a well taken goal by Mele. In the second half Pontyclun added another 4 goals from Hosey, O’Connor, a 2nd from Mele and Hatch, scoring his first of the season and also getting 3 assists. Swansea had some good possession at times and put up a good battle in the wind. A special mention to Clive Headon making his Pontyclun debut today with a fine performance.
Barry Town secured a hard-fought 0-2 win away to Merthyr with excellent football played in the right spirit throughout by both teams. An even first half lit-up when Barry keeper, Mullen, superbly tipped away a 'Murph' Jones strike and minutes later, man of the match Averies broke the deadlock with a scintillating volley from a Murray free-kick to make it 0-1 at the break. With 15 minutes remaining, Lewis made it 2 for Barry, slamming home a rebound when his initial shot was saved by Merthyr gloveman, Rees. The visitors held on comfortably to round-off a magnificent team performance.
Leaders, Newport beat Penybont 7-1 at Llanwern including a Walker hat-trick. Barry Bobbett scored a consolation for the visitors.
Cardiff Accies secured a hard-fought 3-2 home victory against Llanelli. Davies and Davidson scored for the Reds, but the Accies took the 3 points with a Buck OG and two goals by Welsh, including a last minute winner.

Llanelli beat Merthyr 2-1 at Penrhos...writes Neil Bryant... The Reds started positively with their left-hand side causing problems and it was from that side that Stamp opened the scoring after good work by Legg. The hosts continued to press and went further ahead this time Stamp the provider for Legg to score. Merthyr were never out of the game and Llanelli can be grateful to MoM, Frater who made some telling last-ditch tackles, and although they deservedly got a goal through Price to make it a nervy finish, a resolute Llanelli came away with all 3 points.
Swansea moved second after a 2-1 win against Cardiff Accies, with Hope and Otway getting their goals. Welsh scored for the visitors.
Penybont and Barry Town fought out an uninspiring 0-0 Draw at Pencoed. Barry, in their first game of the season, started sprightly, but their inaccuracy allowed the hosts to finish the half the stronger and they should have taken the lead into the interval, but Harris fluffed his lines when his penalty kick was superbly saved by keeper, Mullen. Barry edged the second half but there was little ‘real’ goal-mouth incident to speak of and the game petered out for a draw, one that the hosts were the happier.

27th September
Champions, Newport, made it 2 from 2 with comfortable 3nil win away to Cardiff Accies, with goals by Walker, Lilygreen and Fredriksen. Penybont move into second after they beat Merthyr 2-0 at Pencoed College. Morgan and Moglia got on the scoresheet.
Swansea ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against a very spirited Llanelli Town...writes Roger Langley... Llanelli started brightly and could have been 2up but Swansea keeper Gary Joyce was in good form .Swansea took the lead with a goal from Andy Jones, winning a header at the far post which looped back across and into the net. The visitors were defending resolutely and 2 minutes before half time Swansea were awarded a penalty, duly converted by Pasquatino to make 2-0 at half time. Llanelli showed great character and rolled their sleeves up for the second half. The hosts introduced fresh legs and Dave Hope made it 3-0 from the edge of the box. For Llanelli, Keeper Wyn Edwards was commanding, John Frater was a colossus, but a special mention for John Taylor who came off the bench at the age of 68 to gain his first minutes in this highly competitive veterans league.

Newport secured a comfortable 4-0 victory in a one-sided game at home to Swansea. Goals by Lilygreen, Owen, Pickering and (Ian) Jones secured a deserved 3 points for the title-holders.
The match between Llanelli Town and Penybont ended all-square...writes Roger Langley...... On a huge day for Llanelli, they welcomed Penybont to Penrhos, for their inaugural match in the over 60's league. Llanelli took the lead directly from a corner from Davidson, an apt milestone from a Llanelli Town legend on his debut with Llanelli vets. The hosts extended their lead through the lively Stamp who was put through by Langley. Moglia pulled one back from a corner for the visitors before Smith broke free down the right and squared to (Davey) Davies to score on his debut.
Manager, Jeff Howells crossed for Langley, but his effort was superbly saved by Penybont keeper, Hosey. In the second half a tenacious Penybont scored 2 late goals through Harris and Howland earned them a well-deserved point with the final score 3-3 in a game played in true Wales Veterans spirit.
