The Women’s Veterans’ football season got underway under cloudless skies at Pencoed College and with all 8 teams playing 3 matches each.

Cambrian leapt to the top of the table at this early stage with 3 impressive victories, including a 2-1 win over current champions, Cardiff Accies, with goals by Kurczewska and an OG. They also defeated two teams making their League debuts, Newton Athletic 5-0 with goals by (Charlotte) Jones (2), Harris, Kurczewska and (Emma) Jones and a 2-0 win over Mumbles with Kurczewska, scoring in all 3 games, and (Kim) Davies on target.
Evans & Williams (Albies) move second after two hard-fought 1-0 victories against Aberavon and Barry Town, Cath Jones and Reed were on target, but keeper, Rebecca Evans was in scintillating form between the sticks. Albies then drew 0-0 with Penybont, who sit in third after a scoreless draw with Barry and a narrow 1-0 victory over Aberavon, Joseph-Alexander getting the all-important winner.
Cardiff Accies and Mumbles are tied on 4pts, with the latter securing a superb 0-0 draw against last year’s champions, Accies, with player-of-the-match, Jenkins, unbeatable in the Mumbles goal.
Although Accies also lost to Cambrian, they did show glimpses of last year’s form with an emphatic 8-0 win over Newton. Dowkes bagged a hat-trick and further goals by Egan, Zahoor, Tannetta, Deans and Anderson secured the points. Newcomers, Barry Town were unlucky not to get something from their match with ‘Albies’ but manager, Eveleigh, should be pleased with their day’s work, and particularly how he ‘rotated’ his large squad. In their first game, they took the lead against Aberavon through a superb Martyn goal, but an equaliser by Thomas ensured a share of the spoils. Sadly, Aberavon player, Emma Dyson, suffered a fracture to her wrist and arm, and everyone at Wales Veterans Football wishes her a speedy recovery. Barry, Aberavon and Newton will all have learned from their first matches in the Ladies Veterans League and will certainly improve as the season progresses.
