15th March
Newport hosted rivals, Barry Town at Llanwern School in the knowledge that a win would maintain their 100% record and probably see them lift the League title! The hosts started well on the ‘compact’ Llanwern School pitch, and they used their extra man in midfield to play some intricate one-touch football, orchestrated by the diminutive Jones. Strikers, Ross and Dyke were busy, but were well marshalled by a defiant Barry rear-guard, and, despite their possession did not test visiting Keeper, Mullen, and it was Barry who created the better opportunities in a frantic first half, but it remained scoreless at the interval.
Driving wind and rain in the second half didn’t make for a feast of football, but it was the visitors again who created the better opportunities and forced several corners, to keep home keeper, Cueto, on his toes. On 70 minutes Seago sent in a corner from the right and although Wilson's resultant header was blocked, he was able to crash home the rebound through a crowded penalty area. It turned out to be the winning goal, which puts both sides level with two games to play, albeit Newport have a far superior goal-difference.

Minutes later the Barry gloveman saved-brilliantly to halt a rampaging ‘Murph’ Jones run, before the visitors then had a period of control themselves, and during an industrious 20minute spell either side of half-time, the game was won! Just before the interval, Stait and Huish combined well and the latter’s cross found Seago, who’s well-placed header evaded Merthyr keeper, Rees. Then early in the second period, the hard-working Cooksey found Seago who again slotted home to give his side a much-welcomed ‘buffer’...and the Barry backline, well-marshalled by Averies was not troubled again. On the hour Huish set-up Seago for his hat-trick goal, to cap a fine performance and earn his side a valuable 3 points before they face League leaders, Newport, next Sunday!
