The Wales Veterans' Football Association welcomed a Worcester Veterans over 65s squad to the capital today and shared the spoils after a 4-4 draw.
Wales o70s are the current ‘double-World champions’, and were using this game as part of the build-up to the forthcoming o70s European Championships and the 2026 World Cup in Australia.... and earned a creditable draw.
Wales were stunned to find themselves 0-2 down within minutes of the kick-off when two long balls over the top caught the Welsh rear-guard napping and the speedy Worcester striker finished clinically. The hosts then dominated and Veasey tucked away two from close-in to make the scores level going into the interval.
The second-half was a carbon copy of the first with the dynamic Worcester striker chasing onto two long balls to complete his hat-trick and then minutes later force a penalty which was duly converted. Wales came back again and camped themselves on the edge of the opponents’ area for long periods. They spurned several opportunities before Morgan deservedly brought the teams level, with two astute finishes, and the game finished all-square.
Wales played some fine football, and the players worked hard in stifling conditions, however, the communication and physicality was not at the usual level and the normally ‘uncharitable’ Welsh defence was breached far too easily, although their contribution to the forward effort was considerable.
The three ‘new faces’ Griffiths, James and particularly, Fisher, showed they will be valuable additions to the group going forward, and, with a bit of tweaking and the return of some key players, this squad should be worthy opponents for England, who host this squad on the 24th April in Lutterworth.
