The Wales Veterans' Football Association were delighted to invite England Veterans to Cardiff to face a Wales o60s Representative team...and a hard-fought match ended all-square at the Ocean Park Arena....
Wales started well with debutant striker, Walker, prominent and his fine hold-up play was bringing team-mates into the game. On ten minutes Mele had an opportunity when Matthews forced the visiting keeper into a hurried clearance, but he saved comfortably. England worked their way into the match but Welsh stopper, Cueto, was never troubled until slack marking at an England corner allowed the visiting full back to head home unchallenged. The hosts fought back and Otway was inches away from a fabulous Matthews cross and from the resultant corner, Averies struck the bar and the rebound would have been converted but for some stubborn English defending. Walker, completed an excellent debut when he turned sharply, before rifling past the England gloveman for the equaliser to and the sides remained level going into the interval.
In the second half, left wing-back, Williams, began to influence proceedings and his accurate crossing was causing panic with the English rear-guard. Walker turned his defender and saw his tantalising cross run the length of the goal-line to safety. Both teams pushed for the winner, Williams firing in crosses from the left and his opposite number causing problems for the Welsh back-line...but the game ended, probably fairly, at 1-1. Wales captain, Medwin collected the trophy, which was retained courtesy of Wales winning last time out!
