Nelson stay top...good wins for Barry and Llanelli!

18th October
Nelson Cavaliers remain unbeaten after a 2-0 win over Penybont...writes Tony Wilding...Before the match started at a sunny, but bobbly Wern, both sides paid their respects to Pontyclun’s John Salmon, who passed away suddenly this week and to those that suffered in the Aberfan tragedy 60 years ago.
The game started with the Cavs having plenty of possession but not making the most of the chances created. The breakthrough came on 20 mins, ending with Anthony Boulton
rounding the keeper after a Jimmy McDonald through ball. The second half continued in a similar vein with Bont’s keeper, Mark Hosey, making several timely saves. Kevin Jones got the second late-on, finishing a rebound from Llewellyn. Mom Cavs Boulton. Mom Penybont Hosey
Barry Town got back to winning ways with an excellent 1-0 win against Merthyr at Bro Morgannwg. In a fine advert for veterans’ football there was plenty of skill, endeavour and goal-mouth activity from both sides in the first half, but it Fredriksen who put Barry ahead on the stroke of half-time. As expected, the visitors threw everything at the hosts at the beginning of the second half, but defiant performances from the whole Barry team, but in particular Matthews, Richards, Wilson and outstanding goalkeeping by Vorster kept Merthyr at bay. As the visitors pushed for parity, it left openings for the hosts to exploit and only fine goalkeeping by Merthyr keepers, Bailey and Jones prevented first Fredriksen, then Thomas and Richards from extending the lead for Barry, but this fine win moves them into second place in the league.
A convincing 0-6 win for Llanelli against Cardiff Accies...writes Neal Bryant...Llanelli travelled away to Llanrumney and welcomed their latest addition off the conveyor belt in Neil ‘Willy’ Williams, and it was he who opened the scoring from the penalty spot, slotting calmly past the keeper. He scored his second courtesy of a Waters pass and a completed a first half hat-trick when he capitalised on a defensive error. Just on the stroke of half-time he got his fourth. In the second half Williams turned provider with a pinpoint cross, which Vaughan Jones headed home. Accies pulled a goal back after free kick hit the crossbar and Mears, reacted quickest to head home. Llanelli made it six when Kennedy notched his first goal for the Reds.
Swansea and Newport fought out a scoreless draw at Penyrheol Leisure Centre.

4th October
Nelson Cavaliers made it 3 wins from 3 with a 2-1 win over Swansea. Boulton and Pope were on target, Howells scored a late goal to keep the hosts on their toes for the last 10 minutes.
Llanelli Town secured a fine 5-2 win against Barry Town...writes Neal Bryant...In a very even first half, the hosts went ahead through a defensive mistake, which Stamp capitalised on. Barry equalised straight away through Thomas after good work by Fredriksen, but then lost both centre-halves to injury, allowing Llanelli to take the initiative. The hosts took the lead just before half-time, courtesy of Huw Davies, despite a loud appeal for handball in the build-up. In the Second half Llanelli raised their game and commanded most of the play, Steve Evans prominent. Davies got his second but not to be out-done, Stamp completed his hat-trick to maintain his fine run of form. The visitors grabbed a late consolation through Wilson, but the game was beyond them at this point.
Merthyr condemned last season’s champions, Continental, to their third consecutive defeat with a 1-0 win at Afining.
Newport secured an emphatic 7-1 win over Pontyclun. Miles (2), Proctor, Pickering, Willis, Herrin and Routley their scorers. Howells scored a late consolation for the visitors.
Penybont defeated Cardiff Accies 2-0 with O’Connor and Thomas on target.

Barry Town put in their finest ‘team’ performance for some time to defeat a hard-working Penybont 7-0, at Bro Morgannwg...writes a pitch-side reporter...The hosts played some flowing football orchestrated by Matthews and ‘Skinny’ Richards, and allowing strikers, Dave Thomas and Fredriksen, to cause problems for the visiting defence. Newcomer, Thomas netted the ‘perfect’ hat-trick and habitual scorer Fredriksen bagged a brace. On the hour, Richards’ long-range effort could only be tipped away by keeper, Hosey, allowing Cooksey to force home, but minutes later the same player’s strike from 30m screamed past the helpless gloveman to enable his side to move top of the League.
Nelson Cavaliers continued their good start to the season with an impressive 0-4 win, away to Pontyclun...writes Tony Wilding...From the off The Cavs put the home defence under pressure and it took a number of superb saves from goalkeeper, John, to keep the score at 0-0. On 30 mins however, the hosts’ resistance was finally broken when Headon, headed in a rebound from a Rowlands shot. Rowlands was a constant threat and got rewarded with a goal on half-time. Pontyclun continued to be stubborn in defence but on 65 mins a length of the pitch move ended with man of the match, Fortt, converting an Elston cross. Pope slotted a pen with 5 mins to go following a foul on Wegener and they moved into second after two matches played.
Swansea beat Cardiff Accies 1-3 at Cardiff University Fields with Jenkins, Toms and Morgan on target. Vaskin scored for their hosts. Champions, The Continental, suffered their second defeat in succession losing 0-2 at home to Newport through a Miles brace.
Last year’s runners-up, Merthyr, were held 2-2 away to Llanelli Town. The visitors took a 2nil lead through Guinane and Clive Evans but the hosts ensured a share of the spoils with 2 late goals from Waters and Cooper.

The big shock of the day saw title holders, The Continental lose 4-1 to Nelson Cavaliers at the Wern...writes Tony Wilding... Cavs were tasked with working for each other to absorb the pressure game that the Continental are known for, but they took the lead following an error from Cavs keeper, although he redeemed himself minutes later with a crucial close-range save. A fine finish from Nelson's evergreen 66 yr old Baldwin made it 1-1 at the interval. Nelson’s half-time substitutions made an immediate impact as Rowlands converted a Baldwin cross, before captain, Wilding, made it 3-1 from the spot. Boulton scored a deserved goal to make the final score 4-1.

Merthyr snatched a late victory against Newport with Price scoring minutes from time. Swansea welcomed Barry Town to Penyrheol, but suffered a 1-5 defeat, courtesy of a Fredriksen hat-trick and goals by Thomas and Rutherford. Jenkins got a late consolation for the hosts. Cardiff Accies suffered a 0-5 defeat at home to Pontyclun with goals by Phillips (2), Mele (2) and Brooks.
Penybont were held 3-3 at home to Llanelli...writes Neil Bryant... A very entertaining first half for the neutral, which saw 5 of the 6 goals scored, including a brace from Stamp for Llanelli and Lodge, Wile and O’Connor on target for the hosts. Water ensured a share of the spoil with a 25yrd strike in the second half, but it’s fair to say both teams will need to defend better should they have aspirations of finishing in the top half of the league.
