The Wales Veterans' Football Association accepted an invitation to take an o65s squad to face an England o65s squad at the home of Kirby-Muxloe FC in Leicestershire, and they came away with a deserved win...writes manager, Rob Seago...
Wales got off to a bright start, with Huish, Les Davies, Branch, Bobbett and debutant, Lambert moving the ball well and dominating the midfield, without seriously threatening the England goal. They continued to look comfortable with the ball until they were forced into changes, when Staddon and another debutant, Huw Davies left the field through injury, and this unsettled the fluidity of the early stages. This was quickly remedied and chances started to come with Les Davies’ long-range effort gathered by the England glove-man, who, minutes later, made a point-blank save from Jon Williams. The half finished with Wales on top, despite noticeable frustration from not finding the net.
The second half continued in the same vein with Wales getting closer to the England goal. Huish and Bobbett saw good efforts go narrowly wide, but with 20 mins remaining, Williams was upended in the box and Branch coolly slotted home the ensuing penalty. The Welsh defence remained resolute, ensuring keeper, Sully’s goal remained unthreatened and they continued with their neat passing game and at the final whistle were ‘comfortable’ 1-0 winners.
