£1100 raised for Prostate Cancer!

The Wales Veterans' Football Association were proud to host an o75s international match between Wales and England o75s in front of a descent crowd at Jenner Park in support of Prostate Cancer. England retained the Aneurin Bevan Shield with a 2nil win after a tough encounter...writes Manager, Tim Bowker...

After losing the toss, England chose to play with a fierce wind at their backs, however, it was Wales who started the stronger with Handley Brusted, marshalling the back three and Gerry Jones and Mike Williams taking control of midfield. The England back-line struggled to keep up with the pace of Wales forwards Billy Arnold and Mike Soroko, leading to a number of free kicks in the Welsh player’s favour. In the 25th minute Arnold was through on goal only to be taken out by the England centre-half, who was fortunate to only receive a yellow card. Jones subsequently went close with the ensuing free kick. The game’s turning point came on 30 minutes when Arnold again, struck a 30yard goal bound shot, only to be denied by the England keeper...who palmed the ball to safety when stranded 5 yards outside his box! After a long deliberation the referee, to the amazement of all, again only brandished a yellow card. A fotunate England began to take more control and in the 40th scored with their first real attack, when striker Mark Hughes hit a sweet shot from the edge of the box. The Welsh heads dropped and Herb Riches added a second minutes later after good work down the right from Jim Ellis.

The second half became a stalemate with England’s Geoff Martel having a superb game in midfield but Wales captain, Joe Quarini, Steve Hold and Handley Brusted consumate at the back and the game ended at 0-2. Sue Evans of The Bevan Commission awarded England player/manager, Ken Pollock the Aneurin Bevan Shield, with Wales’ Handley Brusted and England’s Geoff Martel handed Player of the Match awards.
