The Wales Veterans' Football Association accepted an invitation from England Veterans FA to send an o75s squad to face the World Cup runners-up at the Tristel Global Stadium and following a cross-country trek, succumbed to a strong England side...writes Manager and Carer, Tim Bowker....
After an arduous 5-hour journey to Newmarket, the Squad finally emerged from their cars, looking like the World's oldest stag-do coming out of a lap dancing club! Newly appointed Capitaine Joe ‘Corelli’ Quarini, who doesn't know his head from his tail, duly lost the toss, enabling the England team to have the sun at their backs. After an uneventful 20 minutes England midfielder Bennett produced a thunderbolt of a shot and with the sun in his eyes the Welsh keeper Bobby "Dazzler" Locke observed "it's lucky the net was there to stop it".
At half time the Wales Management shuffled the pack and, after starting the game with a diamond formation in midfield decided to forgo Dame Shirley Bassey's advice and selected a midfield 5 with Frank 'Hoots Mon where's ma porridge' Lennon and debutant David Stock working the flanks. Wales were now on top only for the England keeper to launch a long kick down the middle of the field, Steve ‘Texas’ Hold, who was combing his hair at the time, refused to head the ball away instead deftly flicking the ball on to England centre forward, Johnny Molloy, who had been pruning the trees behind the goal at the time. Molloy wisely placed his secateurs on a nearby bench before tapping the ball into the empty net. Ten minutes later Molloy, who had now moved onto pushing his 1972 John Deer lawn mower over the 3G pitch, added his second and England’s third....to complete a long and challenging day for Wales.
Later in the bar we were served stone cold chips and a sausage a lumberjack would have trouble chopping up. Quarini accepted the Wales man-of-the-match award and we staggered back to the Premier Inn with a pub next door....and looked forward to the epic journey home!
Congratulations to the players who were selected by the Welsh management team of Tim Bowker and Jimmy Mullins.....
