Wales o70s lift World cup....again!

By Alun Huish

Wales o70s retain the World Cup 2026 for third time in Australia.... 12th October to Friday 16th October!

The Wales Veterans' Football Association are thrilled to report that its o70s squad have once again retained the o70s World Cup trophy, this time in sunny Queensland.

Huge congratulations to Manager, Jon Ross and his squad, who faced fierce competition from Germany, USA, Japan, Denmark, Canada and the hosts over four demanding days of football in the beautiful beach-side township of Cleveland, Australia.

Day 1 - Wales secured 1-0 wins over both Japan and the USA with Graham Miles and Peter Morgan on target.
Day 2 - they defeated Canada 3-1 courtesy of a Peter Morgan hat-trick, but were held to a scoreless draw by the hosts, Australia.
Day 3 saw a satisfying 2-0 win over the USA with Paul Young and Peter Morgan again on target. Followed by a 1-0 win against Connecticut, Kev James getting the all-important goal which took them into the semi-final.
Day 4 - Wales advanced to the final after a comfortable 4-1 win against Denmark, with goals by Miles, Bob Kippen and a fabulous brace by habitual scorer, Morgan. In a tightly contested final, Wales defeated Germany with a Kev James goal, but keeper, Meacham made a, customary, spectacular save to ensure Wales triumphed and Wales captain, Phil Gibb, lifted the trophy for the third year in a row!

Wales over 75s finished runners-up in the Plate Final, narrowly losing 1–0 to the USA, with Germany lifting both the o75 and o80 trophies.

This success is a shining endorsement of the quality, passion and fitness that exists within the o70s league of the Wales Veterans Football Association, and a further reminder that the love of football never fades.
