Wales 40s 5, Mathern 35s 1. Ocean Park Arena, Cardiff. 7th February, 2026

The Wales Veterans' Football Association invited a Mathern o35s squad to the Ocean Park Arena in Cardiff to play a a Wales o40s side....and the hosts secured an excellent victory....writes a pitch-side reporter....
A goal on 14 seconds from Gavin Beddard set the tone of the first half as the wales 40s attacking 3-4-3 formation swarmed over their ‘younger’ opponents in the opening minutes of the fixture.
Debuts were given to Steve Hall, Chris O’Sullivan, Rob Shannon and Kevin Davies and all four players performed well...the very impressive O’Sullivan getting on the score sheet with a great strike from the edge of the box on 10 minutes to make it 2-0.
It was 3-0 on 14 minutes when a superb cross from the right from Shannon was met by Paul Keddle whose side foot volley was an emphatic finish.
To be fair to a shell-shocked Mathern, they regrouped and came more into the game as the half moved on.
Manager Laurence Owen fully utilised his entire bench first half as his charges took a 3-0 lead into the interval.
Wales slightly tweaked their system second half to neutralise the impressive midfield and wide performances of Mathern’s, Simon Prangley and Dominic Connor, but it was Mathern who got the next goal when a well delivered Prangley free kick was unfortunately steered into the net by Wales captain Mark Dodds. Wales showed their character and came back with the goal of the game when an O’Sullivan pi- point cross was met by a Beddard bullet header leaving the keeper no chance. Paul Keddle completed the scoring with a lovely solo goal and rightly deserved the Wales MOM award.
Mathern made the second half a much better game and they were a very decent outfit, Simon Prangley was awarded the Mathern MOM award but a number of their players stood out...including Connor, Hillman, Thomas and Hibbs.
Another excellent display from an impressive Wales 40s squad
